Welcome to our open garden event for 2020. Working alongside spring expo, we'll bring you a selection of gardens around our unique district. All gardens are home gardens, worked and lovingly tended by their owners. They are there for you to enjoy, take your time, stay the weekend and peruse the gardens and our beautiful district.
If you missed out on our inaugural expo, don't miss out this year. Join us for plant stalls, workshops and displays from Saturday October 17 to Sunday October 18. Bus trip to secret gardens, sign up for a three hour tour.
Open gardens have been a feature in Burra for many years, which after a small hiatus, was brought back to life by Lis Jones-Ingman in 2012 and run under the umbrella of the Burra Gallery. In 2015 The Burra Districts Open Gardens Group became an independent working group with Helen Carmody as coordinator securing a grant from Goyder Council enabling the purchase of banners, brochures, the production of a website as well as a concerted PR campaign. There already was an active Facebook page, but the funding enabled Open Gardens to secure branding as an event in its own right. The grant was auspicious in creating a strong dynamic, which along with the focused brand helped to create a level of excitement over the weekend, seeing Burra cafes filled to capacity, a boon for businesses with so many satisfied garden lovers touring the district.
Our aim is to establish Open gardens as a permanent fixture on SA’s tourism calendar
Open Gardens has grown to embrace the region, and is no longer about one town, but is proud to represent the district as a whole. Last year saw us develop a successful formula for running the event which we intend to draw on and develop over a period of years to establish a niche tourism event for Goyder with a sustainable base. Our climate is a huge selling point, gardens in our region cannot be tempted by the fussy, and so we grow a variety of plants which are in high demand by gardeners. We can afford to showcase this evolved way of planting, offering visitors a first hand look at successful gardens working with their environment, the watchword these days in times that require the careful husbanding of water.
We plan to create packages which will encourage visitors to stay for the weekend, spend time in the region exploring the wonderful scenery we have on offer.
Burra is a beautiful heritage setting and both the attractive Market Square and the Town Hall will be the central hub and platform for the weekend, as we entice people to stay and explore the area
On Saturday morning, Burra itself will take on a rather festive look with special emphasis on the Garden Expo at the Town Hall on Friday and Saturday. Have a look at the Spring Gardens Expo page on this site, for details of the wonderful things happening. Over the weekend, spend some time at the expo, then you can sit outside at one of the outdoor cafes and have a relaxing morning tea before setting off on your garden tour. Gardens are open from 10am until 4pm.
The links on the RHS of this page will give you access to information re accommodation, food, galleries, shops and all things Goyder.
Maps of the gardens will be available at the Visitor Centre and the Town Hall as part of the event booklet. Can also be viewed on Burra Districts Open Gardens SA Facebook page, and on this site.
